laid back restaurants in town. Chef Mike McDonald

three delectable types of 'cue.

one sixtyblue:
Blues, Bourbon and Barbecue!

By Juel Grange

In time for summer, Wednesday night's dining destination just got infused with a little southern comfort.

Primarily owned by all-time favorite B-ball super-player Michael Jordan, one sixtyblue Restaurant and Bar is serving up patrons with our favorite B's on Wednesday nights: Blues, Barbeque, and Bourbon.

A gem of the West Loop neighborhood, located at 1400 W. Randolph, the contemporary lofty exterior and interior décor provide an upscale space for an after-work outing with colleagues or a fun evening with the girls (or guys). Quite the summer kick-off, from 5:50 p.m. to 10 p.m., Bourbon and BBQ Night seems to have weekly-ritual potential.

Then there's the grub. Chef Michael McDonald is taking it down home with some authentic southern American barbeque. All crafted with market-fresh food, of which some ingredients are grown in the eatery's on-site garden.

The hearty BBQ platter, pleasantly priced at $12, features three styles of barbeque, including an Asian duck spring roll, dry rub spare ribs, barbeque chicken thighs, cole slaw and sweet potato fries.

Tantalizing indeed, the spare ribs are marinated for two hours and offer a combination of aromatic spices, including cinnamon and garlic powder. As for the chicken, juicy is an understatement to describe these decadent boneless thighs. Dipped in a sweet barbeque sauce, they prove to be a piece of char grilled perfection. And for a nice compliment to your plate, quench your palate with a sharp swig of bulleit and lemongrass-ginger bourbon-spiked iced sweet tea.

Let's not forget to mention the full-out jam session taking place as you inhale your BBQ'd delights. Prepare to grove to some smooth tunes, two 75-minute sets, presented by critically acclaimed blues musician Gerry Hundt. A favorite at South Loop's iconic Buddy Guy's Legends bar, Hundt gives audiences a warm rendition of traditional Chicago blues, with the help of his harmonica and guitar. The music schedule is subject to change, according to management, so it's best to call ahead (312/850-0303).

All in all Blues, Bourbon and Barbeque Night appears to be quite the weekly treat. The delectable dishes and harmonic melodies are truly enough to always count us in.
