N’Careers: Advice for Windy City Workers

By Adria Joseph

Q. I'm a hard worker, but I'm invisible at my job. I work for Cingular which was recently been acquired by AT&T, and I fear that I will be downsized once the AT&T players are in place. How do I improve my worthiness at work?
--Trying to keep in touch

Dear Trying,

Unfortunately, there is no sure-fire way to avoid being downsized once a new company has taken over. However, it is important that you continue your good work ethic. Do not use this time to slack off. You never know whom you may need to ask for a reference.

As for being invisible, there are ways to make sure the movers and shakers know your name. There is an enormous amount of work that goes into a merger, and this would be a great time to ask your superiors if there are any special projects that you can work on to assist them during this transition.

Not only does this show initiative, it shows that you care about the company and not just your position. Companies have been known to move employees throughout departments to keep their staff whole and to avoid having to downsize.

Subsequently, get your personal business in order. In the event that the other shoe drops, you want to be prepared. Making sure your resume’ is updated is key. What new work experience did you acquire during your time there? Do you have any major accomplishments in this position? Make sure it is added to your resume.

Re-assess your career goals. Is your current career path the one you actually want? Is your skill level where you want it to be? Look into classes or seminars to increase your knowledge in your chosen field.

No matter what happens, remember, you are the only one that can determine your worthiness.
